the real issue with the windows 11 switch is the fact that a lot of very modern machines are either a: marked as not supported and thus won't be upgraded by the completely non-technical user, or b: misconfigured from the factory in a way that will prevent the otherwise automatic upgrade (my own desktop was listed as incompatible despite being brand new, turns out all the shit 11 asked for was turned off on the uefi settings)
8.x->10 didn't have that issue
although, there were a lot of people getting new machines because those Windows 8 machines with HDD boot drives were getting fucked by Windows 10, which runs like shit on an HDD in a way that 8.1 didn't... but a lot of people just put up with it
