Despite just finding big machines exciting, I think autistic people (read: otaku) tend to like things with tons of models, intricate numbers, classification systems, and whatnot. I think it's a reason battleships, planes, and guns are also popular with them.

Trains and railroads also kind of augment landscapes nicely I think. That's a reason I like them, although I'm no 鉄ちゃん.
