in particular, a booted Linux kernel can start an application interactively, which lets it handily satisfy basically every definition of an OS other than those defined by Richard Stallman, who is incredibly jealous that the GNU kernel (HURD) is a pile of shit that no one cares about and so he tries to leech into Linux's success by claiming that Linux NEEDS the rest of the GNU software to operate and cries out that a full "Linux Operating System" would be GNU/Linux

I like RMS for a lot of reasons but he has been pretty self sabotaging to his own cause for the last 30 or so years.
