Lysandre from Pokemon X/Y was motivated by the idea that the universe is naturally beautiful and that humans squeeze out the beauty from it through things like destruction of nature, privatization of historical landmarks, etc. In order to stop humans from continuing to destroy the beautiful Kalos region he set up Team Flare to develop a weapon to destroy the world. The buy-in being a few million dollars was to lure rich people (the ones who benefit from squeezing the beauty from nature the most) to the team so when the weapon actually gets deployed, Lysandre can personally make sure that it gets used on them too. After this, the world will be free of humans and Pokemon will be free to live in harmony with nature once again
