I might be thinking of a different incident, but there was a forum whose admin team was infiltrated by the feds. When a new version of Tor was released, they uploaded a backdoor'd version of it to the site and announced that everyone should download it.

My understanding (and please correct me if I'm wrong sweat ) but normally Tor is safe unless every node you connect to is compromised.
