Instead, Linux usage numbers are climbing.
Pretty much any technical rather than ideological reason would reasonably be able to be handled by WSL, and if not for MS continuing to fuck up, your average person, even your average technical person wouldn't have any ideological reasons to switch. People in general don't give a shit about Free Software, they just want a system that works.

I will also not discount the extreme effectiveness Valve has had, since gaming is by far one of the biggest things holding a lot of people who would switch back from running it on their main rig, and Proton (along with the Steam Deck basically ensuring that game devs actually make sure shit works there) has been a massive boon to those people... but again, most people wouldn't care if they didn't feel like they were being pushed into a corner for no good reason. Now, they have an out and good incentive.
