Why do numbers go from right to left? Why is the number ten written as 10 instead of 01?

Think of it this way, if you have the number 1111111111111111, if you add 1 to it, why do you add it to the last digit instead of the first one? It would make more sense for it to become 2111111111111111 than 1111111111111112.
