That is interesting additional context, but I'm not sure I fully agree.
First, I can agree that it is a generalized anglosphere problem rather than purely American, that makes sense.
But second, just as you said yourself, America is the cultural center of the world, so people abroad being infected by American influence doesn't mean it's not an American (or, as we now agree, anglo) problem overall. To know better, we would have to get better data on the origin of the trend to measure spread, and to verify if you only saw a few people in primarily anglo-centric channels but otherwise from other origins talk about it too, or if it's also a general sentiment there.
For example, it's absolutely not a thing where I currently live, nor where I was born. But I saw it happen and grow when I was in America (over about a decade I'd say)
Third, I don't think your comments about age differences relate to the above, although I agree this became part of the public psyche around the same time.
