It's all the same thing.
The biggest mistake was standardization of emojis in Unicode like

Supporting them is no longer a choice, their graphics are inconsistent between OS and browsers, they have less individuality than custom emotes, there's all kinds of political agendas in there, it makes Unicode itself way more bloated, fonts now feel obligated to support them and font renderers and text parsers are more complicated, etc.
