When it comes to making friends in university, I made all of mine through tabletop roleplaying. I pretty much just went to the first club meeting and asked "hey, who wants to join my D&D campaign!?" and it worked out pretty well.
Pic related was something I drew for 4chan /tg/ to describe the group. A couple people drifted away a while ago, but in the end us three remained bonded enough to still be friends who game together 6 years later!

However, the rest of the people in the club were either unbearably socially awkward even by our low standards as geeks, or they were really big into racial and gender politics. In retrospect, I got pretty lucky by getting the good ones, so I can't promise the same results for anyone else. Still, what I CAN promise is that if you don't do ANYTHING, you'll make no lasting friends.
