I lashed out at Peter immediately after reading the chapters that really don't mention him in a positive light. I'll need to reread the first half of the book to better judge him in her life.

I think about how she despite having a new start at a new school immediately shied away from classmates to protect her secret. Maybe she could have found friends if not for her being used every day. And she only seemed increasingly humiliated about this as the time went by. She started dissociating hard.

I feel like Margaux focuses on the later half of the book on how much she wanted - back then - to escape Peter, but was at the same time so dependent on him. And he used it, despite, as I said, not being that attracted to her.

>Sometimes I think you're using me. Sometimes I don't think you love me.
>Like I'm just a thing. Like I'm not really a person. Like I'm a doll.

And a much later quote from Peter - not a direct response to the above - that boiled my blood. :depression:

>"I love you," Peter said, his voice cracking. "And you are special. I loved my daughters, too, and I only wanted to show them how much.

Overall, I choose to believe she and her family were capable of growing without Peter. The funniest bits usually involved the father, the embodiment of :mexi: . But yeah, maybe Peter saved her. He didn't start problems in their family, only used them.

She was kinda cute. Shame about the scent when she turned twelve. :depression:
