what's your favorite historical sound change? mine is the debuccalizing of /k/ to /ʔ/ from Proto-Oceanic to Hawaiian. this is quite transparent when looking across the oceanic languages: the samoan word for "fish" maintains the original /k/ with /'i.ka/, while in hawaiian the word for "fish" is /'i.ʔa/.
