One thing that's really struck me in recent years is how much people struggle with unvarnished atheism. Like they'll abandon Christianity, become Atheist, and have strong critiques of the absurdity of religion which presumably apply across the board. And then some time later they'll backslide into paganism, Wicca, or some sort of vaguely mystical belief. I have two friends (though tbf one of them never really went so far as calling themselves atheist), and one of them is Wicca with all of the magic spells and tarot bull, while the other one is obsessed with aliens with what is clearly a quasi-religious intensity, following every sighting and joining groups on discord and rando forums (which I privately refer to as 'Bible Study or 'Madrasa').
