If you just make a good game, the story will follow.
Mechanics inform graphics. A game that primarily features melee combat might be set in medieval times, or it might be a martial arts tournament, while a game that features flight and ranged combat might be UFOs blasting lasers at each other, or birds shooting slingshots at each other.
Graphics inform story. Why do I have to fight these other knights? Who is running this martial arts tournament? Why am I fighting other UFOs in space? Why are the birds angry at each other?
