Another misconception is that you can't commission things with the characters. This is not true! Commissions don't count as commercial activity for the license (https://law.stackexchange.com/questions/113725/is-a-commission-considered-a-commercial-use-under-the-cc-by-nc). And if that wasn't enough, the PCL also explicitly allows commissions.
