I use HDR on Wayland+KDE on an oled TV and it works pretty well. Things have come a long way in the past few years. It's at least as good as W11s implementation if not better. You're probably right though that the vast majority of people don't care about it or even realize that their device already supports it. Pretty much any device with a screen made in the last 6 years already does HDR.
