shit like this is immeasurably worrying and I am genuinely baffled constantly as to why there isn't a filesystem that does checksumming or redundant writes (although it may or may not have helped in this particular case! if the data was bad in RAM, any checksum or redundant copy would be of the bad in-memory data... )
