What you're talking about is a distinctly American sickness, but I don't think the issue is exposure (or non-exposure) to war. Otherwise the Germans (pre-1945 anyways) and Russians would be the most pacifistic people out there.
Personally, I think it's a combination of Europe sending their adventurers, criminals, and "white trash" over here, and us being forced to fight the Injuns.
