This is something I wonder about. Some works seem to be total OC factories, meanwhile others see hardly any. Is there something above the premise that attracts OCs? Maybe the writing?

My theory is that stories without many OCs tend to have strong characters (even just strongly designed) who are too interesting in their own right for people to bother with OCs, meanwhile OC factory feature more 'blank slate' characters but have a highly adaptable premise.
