I watched Eva when I was a depressed teen. It was unironically great. Eva is one of those shows that are best watched during a certain head space, which is why I think people who watch Eva and hate Shinji aren't wrong but aren't right either. You just gotta be in that head space to best empathize with it.
More than a decade later, when I got into a better mental place, I binge-watched the rebuild series. And that was great too. It's very obvious Ano made Eva when he was depressed, and when Ano became a happier person, he rebuilt Eva in his new image
