I figured as much that, it was popular amongst the anime communities at the time rather than it being massive popular amongst non anime fans. Even pic related like the kamina glasses was a big fad that never seemed to go away. Even the fact that a suggestion for a new flag was a ttgl reference shows it's influence. Wish I could've been there.
