IIRC Maruko is in that rare spot in Japan where it's an anime that's socially acceptable to watch among everybody. It doesn't specifically appeal to either otaku or children like most others do, it has some of the broadest appeal and that makes it an absolutely massive phenomena, sort of like The Simpsons.

Despite this popularity, or rather as a cause of its otakulessness perhaps, it's rarely ever talked about in western anime spaces. It really does suck, it's one of the few anime I enjoy anymore.
